Question is, will you pay know that (a) the game is still likely to be bugged and glitched and (b) you can play an older COD or any other FPS that doesnt charge ?

Its only for Call of Duty Elite.
From what i've heard it sounds like the basic game and MP are free but if you have an Elite account you get access to extra stuff like the new stat tracker, customisable player/weapons etc.
I dont think they are charging for the actual MP - just something that is 'extra' on top that gives the fanboys all the 'Hoorah!' they could ever need.
I thnk MW3 will have less than MW2 regards basic MP features - i think things like custom killstreaks, weapon camo, player likeness etc. will be features of Elite accounts.
And probably some overpowered weapons.

slippery slope has begun. I do hope this will mean dedicated servers then?

If paying for the service i would want to have a better connection than the half baked p2p method of console play currently allows

So you pay again for a new iteration of a game that has less features than the old one, but don't worry you can pay extra to get more?

I'm glad I've not enjoyed CoD much since MW1 so I won't miss it. I've always preferred Battlefield games but liked CoD for the closer, faster-paced combat I used to get from CS 'back in the day'.

As Jex says, the slippery slope has begun.

Although i'm not a MW player this doesn't bode well for the future of other games. Once one has started it, they'll all think it's ok to charge a monthly fee.

Agreed about the slippery slope. Yes you don't have to pay for Elite status but there will be some benefit in game or nobody would pay it. Therefore if you want to compete your going to have to pay it. It will go the same way as DLC. DLC did really used to be an after thought, extra they put in the game after release. Now it's decided on from day one of development and really is a way to get more money from the same game. This will go the same way as DLC, everyone will be doing it and it'll become the norm and we wont bat an eyelid. Glad I haven't got myself too heavily involved in this genre.

I've sort of come to terms with paying for DLC, but thats a 1 off payment to be able to play a game to its full potential, rather than a subscription. If they are going to release additional content on a monthly basis and make it free to subscribers then that would be a different kettle of fish, but i very much doubt that will be the case.

Cerberus network anyone? EA tested the water with this one, sending out a free code for new purchasers and making pre-owned people buy a new one for 1200 M$ points.

Just as the vast majority will come to terms with paying for this

Videogames are like a drug, and within reason, the vast majority will do what it takes to get their fix. Games companies are just coming to really understand this and now that proper money is to be made from selling games the businessmen are squeezing every last drop they can.

This is all about that 'single use online code' isnt it?

Personally I have a big problem with this, EA sold the game with the promised feature of online play. Just because someone sells it to someone else doesnt affect the cost of supporting that game for EA one bit. They are just having a hissy fit as many people buy second hand which they view as 'lost' sales.

I dont see how they get away with it TBH Imagine buying a used car that has its engine removed first by Ford as you 'didnt buy it new'.

Don't you mean now EA have gone mad.

I pay a monthly sub (along with Jexs, Anx, Mikey, Tank and some others) for playing an MMO. The only reason I'm willing to do that is because it's so well supported and it's always evolving.

Back om topic, I can see Battlefield licking their lips at this move.

Battlefield/EA have already done something similar to this on PC with Battlefield Heroes and now Battlefield Play4Free.
They are based on micro-transactions rather than a subscription, where you can buy upgrades and weapons, but the basic game is free.
All maps/modes are free.

Exactly, any additional content (like the big update this month) is free. There is no additional charge for added content. But to be asked to pay for BOTH is a little over the top, especially after the initial outlay of 30-40 for a console game. At least EVE can be downloaded for free, even though i paid for the boxed version, 10 i think. It would have taken an eternity to download it for me

I'm dreading to think how big that update will be. I reckon another 6-800Mb fatboy download. However Incarna does sound pretty cool.

Eve's a whole different ball game though isnt it and one that is (even though I dont lol) worth paying for. Like you say you have the ever-evolving game world, support and overall package that goes with the MMO style.

This COD system for map packs and in-game equipment, along with some 'analysis tools', just reads like a rip off....

Ultimately if you get value for money for a game then fair enough, sell DLC if you want to. People can chose if they want to extend or expand a gaming experience - or not.

It's parents I feel sorry for, as you get kids so sucked games like CoD that they have to have it and it's the parents that get it in the ear when thing find they NEED to buy more stuff to be on par with their mates (or whatever).

Well i dont feel sorry for any parent who buys their 9 year old a 18 rated game.
In fact they deserve to be ripped off.

Alot of the kids at my daughters primary school talk about Black Ops, asking each other if they have unlocked this or had that for a killstreak.
And as they are 10 or 11 at most when they leave the place.... Shocking.

It's one of the benefits of being a gamer. We know that there are a lot of games out there that just aren't suitable for kids, yet many parents seem oblivious to this. My daughter will be only playing what we feel suitable not what her mates are into.

Hmmmmm. If there were a way to make in-game credits to pay for the subscription like the eve Online plex thing, it'd be cool. But it's ok for me so far, I can't use FPS's on a console anyway

Though I was expecting EA to do this kind of thing first.

Well if it works with COD, don't be suprised to see it added to other games like BF.
