Memory lane

Before you could tear around Leguna Seca at speeds of 150mph plus in a fully customised 700 BHP Porsche 911 GT3 or thunder down Mazda Raceway in a gloss black Ferrari hitting speeds of over 240mph and doing this LIVE with someone in a different country, you were knocking a white square dot around a black screen using a joystick attached to what looke like a coreded telephone wire,....anyone remember? The ATARI video box! What a machine! A load of built in dot games and a total of ONE sound effect,..the BLEEP lol Then the world got inteligent and God created the SPECTRUM 48k and the COMMODORE 64 with games on TAPE! Such titles as Dizzy the egg and Fist, they took around 2 and a half hours to f*****g load and sometimes would crash at the very last point so you would have to rewind the tape and type a whole novel of loading instructions before hitting play and having your eardrums surgicaly removed with the loading noises it would make! Did anyone have a SEGA saturn? They were end of SEGA, remeber their slogan? 'To be this good takes AGES,...SEGA spelt backwords. The SONY playstation murded SEGA and now they just make games,..i thought SEGA would allways be the king of the games console! The PLAYSTATION was an explosion that woke up the gaming world and wev'e all been buzzin since, we all said the graphic's were like photo's on the PS 1 untill the PS 2 came out and then we all said the graphics are like photo's not like the PS 1, untill the XBOX 360 came out and then we all said the graphics are like photo's, not like the PS 2! I wonder what the next gen graphics will be like and how real they look? One thing for sure, we will all say WOW the graphics are like photo's,..not like the XBOX 360 or the PS3. I never imagined i would be talking to someone on the other side of the world on a games console! I wonder what they think of next!?

I used to put all my pocket money in a Space Invaders coin-op machine -- located in a local record shop! And, we all (a few mates from school) used to travel to Wolverhampton train station just to play Asteroids -- the machine was in the cafe there. The Pac-man machine (never liked this game much), was in the cafe at Birmingham New Street train station.

I travelled a lot more then, but not as far as now -- I don't actually go anywhere anymore though. I even work from home with people from as far afield as North America and Northampton. Noone in Wolverhampton though -- not even the train station!!

Had a rich friend who bought the first Atari games console -- had paddle controllers and a game that sort of resembled Space Invaders. We used to spend days taking turns on that -- he had it setup on an old, clapped out black and white (state of the art) portable tv -- the screen was virtually a sphere!

Yep, I do. And if you could spin the ten pence just right, you could get more credits -- we never lasted 15mins on a single 10p though.

All those machines always felt like kind of a swiz to me -- setup just to fleece money out of idiots like me -- Just like the games of today!!

My fondest memories of old school coin ops involved "Cresta Wars" and a length of strimmer wire

I remember those days fondly, missile command was a favourite of the early stuff, but as time progressed I got to like super monaco grand prix (i think thats what it was called), i even used to be able to finish it, all for 20p! I believe the big versions of this machine were actually in 3d, which was amazing for the era (think back to around the mid 80's).

My first memories were the table top games and the original space invaders machines that used to be at the ice rink I used to go to in Birmingham when I was a kid, does anyone remember them, they used to put coloured film on the screen to pretend it was in colour! but galaxians was the dogs on the tabletop machines shortly afterwards ..... oh the memories.

A list of the machines i've owned:

ZX81
Spectrum
C64
Atari ST
Amiga
then the darkest days started ... the switch away from the force to the dark side of ..... MS!
THE FIRST PC .. a lowly 486 66mhz with 4meg of ram if i remember.

Also owned consoles:
Nintendo NES
Sega Master system
Sega Megadrive
Nintendo SNES
Nintendo 64
PS2

and thats just what i remember, there could have been more!

HOW MUCH MONEY DID I SPEND ?????????? JEEEZ I COULD A BIN RICH I TELLS YA!

hehe some nice nostalgia here, I started with a ZX spectrum and between myself and my brother weve had almost every major console since then......we used to get opposite consoles so we could try everything that came out....like i'd get a mega drive and he'd get the SNES, even now infact.....went to visit him the other day and hes on a PS3 now.

Maybe im not quite as old as some of you guys cause I dont remember asteroids & space invaders etc being in the arcades, street fighter 2 was the first arcade game that amazed me and made me want to spend my pennies.....they even ran mini SFII tournies in the arcade when I was kid

OK, how about the ATARI handheld console,...the LINX or LYNX? and the SEGA handheld version,...the SEGA gamegear, Neo Geo did one to, cant remember the name tho,..Neo Geo pocket? anyway, they were all a W****R to look at, always adjusting the contrast and only 16bit graphics the picture was kinda hard to stare at, but at the time they were the nuts, miniature cartridges that came in little plastic cases and what about the accessories bag! The giant 2 ton T.V aerial adaptor or the Magnifying screen lol,.. a giant magnifying glass hanging of the 'PORTABLE' games machine, buy the time you had stuck on all the accessories it looked like a prop from Dr.Who Ahhhh man, they were the days, i used to love hacking my car around in OUTRUN, or killing all the badies in GHOULS & GHOSTS, i reckon one of my ALL time favourites has to be SUPER MARIO CART! and the level i was king of,...was the ghost track lol I also remember buying the Official SEGA magazine which had a pic of all the SEGA machines that were out running down the left side of the mag,..or was it the top, but as arcades go, my favourite racer was one that i cant remember the name of,...brain block! It had a mini SONIC the hedgehog fury toy hanging from the rear view mirror, anyone remember that?

I started my gaming career Granstand Astro Wars, for anyone too young to remember......

Click the image to open in full size.

I then moved onto the Spectrum, Atari ST, Atari Jaguar The Jaguar was a bag of **** with nop games, however it did have the first AvP game, which imo was the best one. Then PS, then PC. Fondest memories are of my speccy and Atari ST. Oh and the endless years lost playing Counterstrike.

Blimey, I had one of those Astro Wars games. I remember it being fantastic.

Also a top favorite was Elite on the BBC-B Basic. Epic game wish there was something like that on the 360.

Im glad every one likes my post 'memory lane', good to see peoples stories. Got a bit of info from the internet, its a quick spec list and picture of the Spectrum 128k!
Has anyone ellse got any pics of any old skool machines?....Doony....nice pic bruva...i remeber that machine

The ZX Spectrum is a home computer released in the United Kingdom in 1982 by Sinclair Research Ltd. Originally dubbed the ZX81 Colour[1] and ZX82[2], the machine was later renamed the ZX Spectrum by Sinclair to highlight the machine's colour display, compared to the black-and-white of its predecessor, the Sinclair ZX81.[3]. It is affectionately known as the Speccy by some of its fans.[4]

The Spectrum was the first mainstream audience home computer in the UK, similar in significance to the Commodore 64 in the USA; the C64 was the main rival to the Spectrum in the UK market during the early 1980s. The introduction of the ZX Spectrum led to a boom of companies producing software and hardware for it. The effects of this are still seen.

Type: Home computer
Released: 23 April 1982
Discontinued: December 1990
Processor: Z80 @ 3.5 MHz and equivalent
Memory: 16 KB / 48 KB / 128 KB
OS: Sinclair BASIC

Check the pic!!

Ha, I laugh at you puny speccy! (even if it is the +2, with the better keyboard). Hahahahahaah...

Look in awe at the enourmously powerfull Atari 400:

Click the image to open in full size. Click the image to open in full size.

Complete with a membrane keyboard a dedicated cassette port and...er... four joystick ports.

Marvel at the front flap, which could open to reveal a fully functional cartidge port (for game and programming language carts). So what if I only had Basic and Star Raiders carts -- that were included, along with the cassette deck for the princely sum of only 400.

It also had a massive 16k of RAM...I know, I know, how could you ever need so much?

Although I wasn't around during the earlier console periods, I know/have played the majority of the older consoles. It's always good to see photos of the old ataris, and the spectrum etc
My favourite older console would have to be the NES or the SNES. Can't be old school Mario action haha.
I'm pretty sure theres a Neo Geo Pocket around the house somewhere also =]
